Carmex - You Think You Know It, But How Well?

Carmex was founded by Alfred Woelbing in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin in the 1930's. Alfred was reported as being quite an inventive man, decided to create a home remedy for the common cold sore.
As anyone who suffers from cold sores know, they are generally painful, ugly and quite embarrassing while they go through the blister and scabbing phases. They crack when you eat, tend to bleed at the worst times and can take weeks to heal.
For those who don't know what a cold sore is, here's an extract from Wikipedia 'cause they explain cold sores so much better than anyone else;
'Herpes labialis or 'orolabial herpes' is an infection of thelip by herpes simplex virus. An outbreak typically causes small blisters or sores on or around the mouth commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters. The sores typically heal within 2-3 weeks, but the herpes virus remains dormant in the facial nerves, following orofacial infection, periodically reactivating (in symptomatic people) to create sores in the same area of the mouth or face at the site of the original infection.
80% of adults in the United States are carriers of the virus that causes cold sores, and more than 50 million adults in the U.S. develop symptomatic episodes every year. Cold sore has a rate of frequency that varies from rare episodes to 12 or more recurrences per year. Most sufferers experience one to three attacks annually. The frequency and severity of outbreaks generally decreases over time.
The virus is transmitted from cold sores and also when there are no symptoms, as it can make copies of itself on the skin in the absence of a blister. So, Alfred Woelbing decided to create a home remedy for the common cold sore. He experimented in his own kitchen and started to sell the remedy to local pharmacies. It became apparent before long that he had found himself a market for his new product.
Alfred incorporated the Carma Labs company in 1937 and continued to produce the Carmex product with his kettle and hot plate in his own kitchen.
Through the 1950's Carmex grew in popularity, with a booming post-war population driving an increase in demand. This demand outstripped his production capacity from the kitchen and the business moved from his home in Woelbing to Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
In the 1970's Alfred, due to his age, ceased to make sales calls to his customers. His son, Don, joined the company and introduced the assembly line. The future had caught up! As production increased, they outgrew the facility in Wauwatosa and moved in to a new facility in Fraklin, Wisconsin which is still located there to this day!
The Carmex product then took a leap forward with an evolutionary change to it's packaging. The squeezable tube was created and launched in to the market place.
In the 1990's, Carma Labs moved in to the future with the roll-out of computers within the company and pushed their products worldwide. They were awarded the #1 recommended Lip Balm in the USA by domestic Pharmacies, being honoured with an Achievement award by the Pharmacy Times magazine. Carma Labs continued to take out this award for 10 years running. A testament to the quality of this wonderful product.
The 1990's came to a close with the introduction of the Clix Stick applicator. Carma Labs is not a company to stand idly on it's laurels!
The founder of Carma Labs, Alfred Woelbing, died on 2001 at the age of 100 years. Quite an innings. Alfred was said to have still worked his 8 hours a day until the age of 96.
Alfred's Son and Grandson continue to drive the company forward, ensuring the supply of the award winning and highly desired Carmex Lip Balm. New flavours, Strawberry and Cherry were introduced around 2006, shortly before the Moisture PlusA� ultra hydrating lip balm was released.
In 2009, Alfred's son, Don, passed away. The Carma Labs company is still run by Alfred and Don's descendants, Paul and Eric who are the 3rd generation to lead the company and deliver the best in lip care products to the world!
