What are the causes and reasons behind dark circles under the eyes? What can be done to treat this phenomenon and can it be prevented? These are the questions I asked myself before doing the research for this article.
I woke up one morning and went through the usual routine to get my day started. I was shocked when I got to the bathroom and staring back at me was a character from Ghostbusters, at least, that's how I felt! Dark, puffy circles under my eyes never seen before. I'm not a drinker and live a generally healthy life, why this? That's when I started doing some research on eye care. Here are my findings;
Dark circles under the eyes have many causes and generally fall into two categories. It is either inherited or related to lifestyle. Inherited related causes generally come down to discoloration of the skin (pigmentation) or allergies. Also, having deep set eyes can also be a cause. I had none of those, so it had to be lifestyle.
Lifestyle related causes generally come from alcohol, lack of sleep and sun exposure. Diet can also be a factor and also leads to puffy eyes. A lot of blood vessels are present around your eyes and the skin tends to be very thin. Many factors in the diet can affect this condition but these are the most common causes;
A Fluid retention
A Hormone changes
A Too much sodium in the diet
According to studies done, a diet high in salt or sodium chloride can greatly contribute to fluid retention and as a result can lead to dark circles and puffy eyes. Processed foods contain high amounts to sodium and (obviously), adding too much salt to your food will increase the sodium intake to unacceptable levels. Some of the biggest culprits when it comes to processed foods are potato chips, processed meats and frozen dinners.
It is recommended by experts that the average adult should take between 1500 and 2400 mg of sodium in their diet. Studies show that the average American takes in almost double that amount on a daily basis.
Here are a few tips that can help you reduce your sodium intake;
A Eat fresh foods, not processed foods
A Buy your processed food selectively - look for 'reduced sodium' on the label
A Eliminate the salt in cooking recipes
A Take it easy on condiments (ketchup, dips, etc.)
A Rather use dried spices and herbs to spice up your food
A Be wary of salt substitutes
Certain skincare products can also greatly reduce the effects of dark circles. The most effective ingredients being Eyeliss and Haloxyl. These two ingredients work best together, so make sure your eye cream
contains both. Also, choose a product that contains a SPF factor of 15 or more. Look for an eye cream with minimum allergens and high in glycerin to also help combat fine wrinkles.
