The History of Hairdressing The art of Hairdressing may seem a modern phenomenon, but is actually as old and ancient as time itself. Hairdressers have been hard at work styling and trendsetting since the time of the Egyptians. From what we have discovered, it all began with Egyptian hair styles. The women of this period wore thick, black, braided wigs decorated with accessories crafted from gold. The wigs were worn by the women in ceremonies and special occasions. The next iconic era of hair recorded came in the times of the ancient Greeks. The women would wear their hair long and curled. They would also sweep the hair back into a bun at the base of their neck. They would often wear flowers and tiaras in their hair to display vibrant colours and sparkle in the sunlight. Gold dust and red henna would be added for extra effect. After the era of the Ancient Greeks, Ancient Rome provided the next platform for hairdressing fashion. Their style was very similar to the Greeks. The difference being they would use wireframes to build the structure and contours of the hairstyle. They would also wear wigs made from human hair and even use curling irons. In more recent history, the Renaissance period in the 15th Century would witness the first ever bleaching of the hair. It was fashionable to display a large forehead in this era. Women would achieve this effect by plucking hair back from the forehead. In the 16th Century wearing elaborate, curly wigs and paling of the skin became the 'it' thing amongst the upper classes. This was in large influenced by none other than Queen Elizabeth herself who was renowned for this somewhat terrifying look. The 18th Century followed on with this style with wigs becoming ever more popular and outrageous in size and design. They were made up of ringlet curls and garnished in feathers and bows. This all came to an end in the Victorian times where the term 'less equals more' comes to mind. Hair had to look natural and healthy. Women would often use oils to give shine and accentuate this effect. Short fringes and soft delicate ringlets were all the rage. From the 1920's the styles would change from decade to decade taking us into the modern day. Modern haircuts, styles and trends are constantly changing and evolving. Many adopt elements taken from past eras and genres and encompass the full history of styles and techniques.
