Once upon a time, when my life was not filled with air pollution, toxic waste water and digital radiation-producing air waves, my hair and skin was beautiful. I was born to a long line of skin and hair beauties, hair nearly waist length and skin kissed by smoothness, firmness and clarity. Growing my hair was never a problem. My skin was always clear. Now, this fairy tale is no longer true.
There are sneaky things that are constantly lurking that can destroy your skin and hair. I have discovered this; and, it is not just the air, sun, wind and water. My hair and skin went on a downward cycle, crashing super fast. Why? The things below are things you need to look out for to protect your skin and hair and to bring it back from the point of no return.
Stress: #1 Culprit for Hair Loss and Skin Aging
I am an overachiever. I work nearly 12 hours everyday, but at times, have even worked up to 18 hours. Moreover, on the weekends, I often go sleepless, restless due to the task allocations going on in my mind as I lay on my pillow.
The toll? My hair was ravaged. My hormones were out of control. I began to see extreme shedding. I was losing about 200 strands of hair a day and some hairs were falling in clumps. My body changed rapidly. I began storing weight in my abdomen and it seemed like I was always on edge. By the time I finally stopped to take a breather, I had lost nearly all my hair. I had to go to a short pixie cut that was not at all flattering.
What made the difference? I had to treat my body from the inside and the outside. First, I began to sleep more. Sleep is important. You can't just miss it. It doesn't make you better that you run on fumes. In the end, just like your car, you will crash.
In order to calm myself enough to sleep, I drank Tazo White Tea with organic milk before bed. I only sweetened it with maple syrup or agave nectar. It worked very well to calm me. At times, I even opted for some Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Chamomile Tea. Also, I began to ditch all chemicals. I used to veg on anything I could get because I was using eating on the go. Salads from the caf? were my best friend. No more. I began to eat a diet filled with no processed foods. That meant no colas, no prepared granola, no fruit bars, no lettuce wraps, no nothing already made. I would have to craft it, and that is when my health began to change rapidly.
Lastly, I began to use only natural skin and hair care
products. This was tough to do, since a lot of things that are certified organic are filled with the admissible amount of chemicals and frankly, I was addicted to my styling gel and texture paste. I found a happy medium with Beauty 4 Ashes products thebeauty4ashescom, especially their ADP Super Gro and godhead products. They work extremely well and are completely natural. ADP products really helped my hair recover. I was able to gain about half my hair back in about 6 months. It was amazing. Now, I am just maintaining.
Food: #2 Culprit for Hair Loss and Aging
Whether you are aware or not, our food is almost akin to space age. I did not realize lye was in my Chinese Dumplings or Polenta for that matter. I was eating high fructose in things I thought were healthy. My granola bar, BHT in my turkey bacon and the hidden things, like my favorite multivitamin - filed with isolated, GMO corn based substances. It was tough. But, with a little ingenuity and help from Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, I was able to effectively eat a healthy, really natural diet.
I began a 50/50 approach to my eating habits. I ate 50% of my foods raw, meaning I would eat a whole uncooked fruits and veggies, fresh salads or raw, soaked nuts for about half the day. If I ate dairy, it had to be organic. Sliced apples and fresh ground peanut butter or a fresh, sea salted organic tomato became my mainstay. The remainder of my day, I ate cooked foods. If I ate meat, I ate only lean cuts and tried to those with no added hormones, flavorings or antibiotics. I choose fresh baked bread with no additives over my beloved white bread. You would be surprised what is in your food.
Within three weeks, I saw an improvement in my skin. It became more silky and soft. I lost the pesky bumps on my foreheads and even saw wrinkle reduction after about a month. I began removing my makeup with Organic olive oil instead of remover and following with a natural face wash. The change must have been so dramatic that I started getting carded again when buying a glass of wine and that hadn't happened in years.
