Hair for a woman is her pride and joy; we all know that if your hair isn't right it spoils your whole look. You can be wearing the most expensive designer outfit but if your hair is dull and lifeless or you've had a bad cut (I've had plenty!!) then you just won't feel right, and vice versa, you can have on a pair of old jeans but if your hair looks great you have the confidence not to worry so much about your outfit. A bad hair day really does make us down in the dumps, especially if we have a big night out planned!
As we age it affects our hair, our scalp becomes drier which in turn makes our hair drier. You're very lucky if it's still as lustrous in your fifties and sixties as it used to be in your younger days, although I know a few women who are lucky enough to maintain their lustrous locks! But for most of us it means changing hair care products, you need a really good moisturising shampoo, conditioner, a good haircut and maybe colour.
OK firstly colour, most mature women colour their hair, some women can carry grey hair off and it looks beautiful! Having your hair dye
d the wrong colour though can be very ageing especially as our skin tone changes as we age, so what suited us a few years ago may not be the case now, so always take that into consideration when thinking about your hair colour, most hairdressers will be able to advise you on this.
A great cut can totally change the way you look, it can take years off you and make your hair feel and look healthy! It's OK to have longer hair but not if your hair is dry and has split ends; it will just look totally lifeless, try to get a cut that doesn't need a lot of maintenance so you're not spending ages blow drying etc. It's worth spending the extra money visiting a good salon and getting the right advice, also you need a style that will suit your face shape as what looks good on someone else won't necessarily be the right style for you, and this is where expertise really matters!
I love the Kerastase Age Premium range for mature hair, their products have vitamins and minerals in them, my hair always feels revitalised and healthy after washing, they are quite expensive but a cheaper option which is also really good is the Dove Proage range, so I usually go between the two. I like to treat my hair to a mask every month which makes it shine and gives it a bit of a lift.
Another amazing product is Argan Oil, this hydrates the hair in a natural way, it strengthens and restores smoothness. Argan Oil also has natural antioxidants. You can apply a few drops about 20 minutes before shampooing, massage into the scalp and comb through. You will definitely see a difference, Argan Oil has so many uses it really is a great product!
I also take a good multi vitamin everyday which I think helps (if you're taking prescription drugs always ask your Dr or nurse if its OK to take with a multi vitamin)
Eat a good healthy diet, if your body is healthy this will reflect in your hair. A diet rich in:
Beta Carotene- Good sources include: Carrots, Kale, Sweet Potato, Spinach
Zinc- Pumpkin Seeds, Dark Chocolate, Crab, Beef (low fat)
Iron- Pumpkin and Sunflower Seeds, Liver, Sun-dried Tomatos, Dried Apricots.
Vitamins B, C, E- Peppers, Dark Leafy Greens, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Kiwi Fruits, Oranges, Strawberries, Sunflower Seeds.
Essential Fatty Acids- Salmon, Sardines, Mackerel, Flaxseeds
Don't use too many styling products at once, choose the right products for your particular hair, and keep your hair dryer setting on low as heat is very drying.
A good cut and colour and the right hair care products will make your hair look and feel so much better and take years off you.
